Reflexology
The history of Reflexology?
Reflexology is a complimentary therapy that is deeply relaxing for the mind and body.
Reflexology is believed to be almost as old as history itself. This treatment was practised in India and China more than 3000 years ago. As well as evidence been shown in Egypt on the wall of the Tomb of Physicians dating back to 2330 BCE.
What is Reflexology?
It is a specific pressure technique applied to the feet or hands where all the internal body structures and organs are mapped or mirrored in miniature. It is a simple non-invasive treatment which helps the body to maintain a delicate balance between the nine systems of the body.
Following illness, stress, injury or disease, the body is in a state of ‘imbalance’, and vital energy pathways are blocked, preventing the body from functioning effectively.
These blockages are usually indicated on the feet as little nodules or grainy deposits felt just underneath the skin. The deposits are made up of Uric Acid and excess Calcium, which build up in the body when the metabolism is not working as effectively as it could be.
The deposits can be broken down by Reflexology with this pressure point technique. The broken down deposits are then carried by the blood and lymph to be eliminated from the body.
This releases tension and helps energy to flow around the body inducing a calm and positive sense of well-being.
What to expect
Treatments are carried out fully clothed with a short consultation about yourself, medical history and how the treatment can be of benefit. During the treatment, your reflexologist will work on the feet while you are reclined on the couch with your footwear removed. All parts of the foot are massaged, so that the body as a whole is treated.
As well as being an intensely relaxing therapy, Reflexology may be useful for treating specific conditions, including;
- High Blood Pressure
- Stress
- Anxiety
- Insomnia
- Migraines
- Asthma
- Sinusitis
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Back Pain
- PMT
- Constipation
- Digestive Disorders
- Stress Related Conditions
Reflexology is a complement to standard medical treatment and is not a replacement to medical help.
A course of 4-6 treatments is recommended if you have not had Reflexology before. It is best if these are taken one a week, and once the course is completed, as and when a treatment is needed. The reason for this is that the body needs time to respond to the treatment and to return to a balanced state.
You will generally feel relaxed and well after a treatment; however everyone is different and can respond in different ways. Minor side effects are common after treatment but are an indication that the treatment is working, and the body is responding in a positive way. Side effects can include; increased urination, runny nose, headache, tiredness.
It is really important to drink plenty of water after a treatment to help combat any side effects that may occur.
Reflexology for Pregnancy and Fertility
Course of 6 treatments: £247
The relaxing and rebalancing effects of Reflexology can have a positive effect on a whole range of conditions, with major benefits before, during and after pregnancy. Pre-pregnancy studies and extensive anecdotal evidence have shown that regular Reflexology treatments can improve the likelihood of a healthy natural conception.
During pregnancy reflexology can be used to gently and safely relieve symptoms such as back pain, sciatica, nausea, fatigue and acid reflux. It is often used to help turn breach babies between 34 and 36 weeks with a good success rate. After 37 weeks this rate dramatically drops, therefore a course of at least 6 treatments from 30 weeks is recommended to give maximum benefit and to promote a healthy natural labour.
More than 3 out of 4 first babies arrive after their due date. Reflexology can be used to help induce overdue labour which in many cases saves the expectant mother from the anxiety and stress of an artificial induction.
Postnatal Reflexology helps to restore the mother’s general health and immune system after birth and in particular promotes tissue healing which is especially helpful after trauma or caesarean section.
